Dominica: An Energy Giant Part 1
Energy is no doubt the most valuable commodity required by all developing countries in the world. We have seen for example China transformed dramatically in the last 25 years with a booming economy and an ever expanding need for energy. America is well known for its addiction to oil and other sources of energy like coal and natural gas. Because of this growing demand for energy throughout the world, the price of energy has risen in recent years relentlessly. The million dollar question is this; Why Dominica has not taken advantage of this opportunity yet?
Dominica is widely known as the nature island of the caribbean but it also possesses some great sources of energy that can be used to help feed the world's appetite for energy. Some of these resources are namely wind, solar, tidal, wave, hydro and geothermal. The latter is one of the most important because Dominica has plenty of geothermal activity in and around the island. The caribbean has 20 active volcanoes and Dominica alone has 9 of these volcanoes. Dominica has enough geothermal energy to sustain its internal needs and supply its neighboring islands Martinique and Guadeloupe. In fact, these islands have been lobbying the Dominican government for years to develop a geothermal power plant in Dominica so that they can buy that energy from Dominica. This seems to be a great opportunity for the economy to grow and provide jobs to thousands. Geothermal energy is clean, renewable, cheap to produce and a positve sustainable development. Some people may be concerned about a power plant like this one in Dominica but it does not harm the environment in any way, shape or form. There have been promising signs lately that indicate this huge resource for energy will be used soon. The funds for exploration have been provided and the process to start using geothermal energy is on the way which will benefit all Dominicans.
